Transient Space

Transient Space:
The piece Transient Space was created following a series of observational investigations centred around the London Underground network, which has come to represent an archetypal view of how we behave when passing through crowded public spaces. In London especially, these spaces act as physical arteries through which people move en masse - an integral part of the infrastructure that supports modern life and culture.

We are all familiar with the experience of passing through the Underground: the loud noises, poor air quality, artificial lighting, and confined spaces. Hearing fragmented sound bites of both native and foreign languages gives a sense of being among others, yet in an anonymous, impersonal way. The individuality of fellow passengers, including their ethnicity and personality, often seems absorbed by the environment.

We instinctively strive to maintain a comfortable distance from those around us, conforming to social conventions that shape our behaviour in urban spaces. Transient Space investigates the psychological and emotional effects of these environments, exploring the relationship between the individual and their surroundings—how we relate to ourselves, to others, and to our lives within the cultural and environmental framework that envelops us.
